Responsibilities

  • Design and document enterprise cloud architectures that meet performance, security, scalability, and cost requirements across multi-cloud or hybrid environments

  • Mentor and guide development teams on cloud design patterns, infrastructure as code, and DevOps practices
  • Conduct architecture reviews and provide technical leadership during project planning, proof-of-concept development, and production deployments
  • Stay current on cloud platform capabilities, emerging services, and industry trends to inform strategic technology decisions

$150,000 - $220,000 per year depending on experience, certifications, and cloud platform expertise. Principal and Distinguished Cloud Architects at major companies earn $220,000 - $350,000+ including equity.

Work environment

Primarily remote or hybrid. Cloud Architects work across multiple teams and business units, dividing time between strategic planning, hands-on architecture design, code reviews, and stakeholder presentations. The role involves travel to data centers or client sites occasionally.

Career growth

Cloud Architects progress to Principal Architect, Distinguished Engineer, VP of Cloud Engineering, or Chief Technology Officer. Some move into specialized roles like AI/ML Platform Architect, Security Architect, or Data Platform Architect. Consulting and advisory positions are also common paths.
