Scrum Master Job Description
Hire effective Scrum Masters with this job description template. Covers Agile facilitation responsibilities, team coaching skills, certifications, and.
The role in brief
A Scrum Master serves as a servant-leader for one or more Agile development teams, facilitating Scrum ceremonies, removing impediments, and coaching team members on Agile principles and practices. They do not manage the team in a traditional sense but rather create the conditions that enable the team to self-organize, deliver incrementally, and continuously improve. The role requires deep knowledge of Scrum, Kanban, and Lean principles, combined with strong facilitation skills and the emotional intelligence to navigate team dynamics and organizational resistance to Agile transformation.
- Facilitate all Scrum ceremonies including sprint planning, daily standups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives with a focus on outcomes rather than process compliance
- Remove organizational impediments that block team progress by escalating to management, coordinating with other teams, or solving problems directly
- Coach team members on Agile principles, helping them internalize continuous improvement rather than following rituals mechanically
- Shield the team from external distractions and scope creep during active sprints while maintaining transparency with stakeholders

Common questions
Is a Scrum Master the same as a Project Manager?
No. A Project Manager typically owns the plan, assigns tasks, and manages timelines hierarchically. A Scrum Master facilitates a self-organizing team, removes impediments, and coaches Agile practices without directing the work. The Scrum Master does not own the project plan and the team collectively owns its commitments.
Do Scrum Masters need a technical background?
A technical background is helpful but not required. Scrum Masters with engineering experience can better understand impediments, participate in technical discussions, and earn credibility with developers. However, the core competencies of the role are facilitation, coaching, and organizational change, which do not require coding skills.
What is the most important certification for Scrum Masters?
The Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) from Scrum Alliance and Professional Scrum Master (PSM I) from Scrum.org are the two most recognized entry-level certifications. PSM is generally considered more rigorous. Advanced certifications like CSP-SM, PSM II/III, or ICAgile Coaching demonstrate deeper expertise for senior roles.
How does a Scrum Master handle team conflict?
Effective Scrum Masters address conflict by creating a safe environment for open discussion, facilitating structured conversations where each party feels heard, and guiding the team toward shared agreements. They distinguish between healthy technical debate (which should be encouraged) and interpersonal friction (which needs mediation). Retrospectives are often the right forum for surfacing and resolving recurring tensions.
