UI Designer Job Description

Hire talented UI Designers with this job description template. Covers visual design, design systems, prototyping tools, and salary information.

The role in brief

A UI Designer creates the visual layer of digital products, crafting the look, feel, and interactive behavior of user interfaces across web and mobile platforms. While UX Designers focus on user research and information architecture, UI Designers translate wireframes and user flows into polished, pixel-perfect visual designs that align with brand guidelines and accessibility standards. This role requires a strong foundation in visual design principles, typography, color theory, and layout combined with proficiency in modern design tools and an understanding of front-end implementation constraints. Exceptional UI Designers create interfaces that are not only beautiful but also intuitive, consistent, and performant.

  • Create high-fidelity visual designs for web and mobile applications including screens, components, icons, and interactive states
  • Build, maintain, and evolve design systems including component libraries, style guides, design tokens, and usage documentation
  • Develop interactive prototypes to communicate design intent, micro-interactions, and animation behaviors to stakeholders and developers
  • Ensure visual consistency across all product surfaces by enforcing brand guidelines, typography scales, color systems, and spacing rules

Common questions

What is the difference between a UI Designer and a UX Designer?

UX Designers focus on the overall user experience including research, information architecture, user flows, and interaction design. UI Designers focus specifically on the visual presentation: colors, typography, icons, spacing, and the polished look-and-feel of interface elements. In practice, many designers work across both disciplines, but larger organizations often separate these roles.

Is coding knowledge required for UI Designers?

While coding is not a core requirement, understanding HTML, CSS, and basic front-end concepts significantly improves a UI Designer's ability to create feasible designs and collaborate with developers. Knowing implementation constraints helps designers make informed decisions about animations, responsive behavior, and component architecture.

What makes a strong UI design portfolio?

A strong UI portfolio showcases 3-5 polished case studies demonstrating visual design range, design system thinking, and attention to detail. Include before-and-after comparisons, responsive designs, component libraries, and real-world project outcomes. Show your design process, not just final screens, and highlight how your visual decisions supported user goals and business objectives.
